The 19th Day of the 8th Moon of the Year

The 19th Day of the 8th Moon of the Year

I am so glad we are staying at an inn tonight. Last night was the most terrifying experience of my life. Right after I had gone to bed, a group of thieves jumped out from the forest and tried to kill us all. Franklin kept me in the carriage and guarded its entrance so they would not reach me. I could hear the blades clashing and shouting. The horses began to run, to where I am not sure, but it was over rough terrain that caused me to fall out of my seat. I was too scared to leave the carriage. I did not know who was outside if anyone was. I tried to remain as quite as I could.

I do not know how long I waited, but eventually one of the thieves ripped open the door. I thought everyone was dead at that point, but Franklin came up from behind them and thrust his sword through their heart. The look on the thief’s face was horrifying. I can still see it as clear as when it happened. Franklin’s arm was bleeding. I had no idea what to do. I stumbled out of the carriage, trying to come up with any idea. Franklin did not send me back into the carriage he had me lead the horses as we walked back to where they left the road. I tried to ignore the blood and bodies scattered over the ground, but it was too horrifying to not see. One of our guards is dead now as well as one of the servants. I am the only one who remained unharmed.

We made it to this town around dawn. I helped Franklin find a healer; everyone but Franklin and I are staying there. They did not have room for the uninjured and Franklin is refusing to leave me alone. As a matter of fact, he is sitting next to the window right now. I can tell something is bothering him beyond just the attack. He has not let me out of his sight. But whenever I ask him he behaves as though I had not said a thing. Tomorrow we will be helping the healer some, hopefully everyone will be improving.

I do not think I will be able to sleep tonight. And from the look on Franklin’s face, neither will he. I wonder if the thieves’ faces are going through his head as well. How can a guard stand this? Then again, I do not know if he has ever had to face this before; Lypo has never had too many problems. Mother will never be informed about what happened. I cannot stop Father from knowing if Franklin believes it best. I just want to go home.
