Notes on Elemental Flight:
Although Phoenixes have been seen at distances for as long as humanoids have been around (apparently there are even dwarven tunnels that have been abandoned for thousands of years decorated with images of Phoenixes), humans had their first interaction with them only a few hundred years. It was an accidental discovery as they were exploring the Kentana Mountains. When someone brought back a feather from their discovery, it became a huge commodity amongst humans. I am horrified by this, but Phoenixes were hunted for their feathers for years. This is probably why they are so rare now. It was during that time that the rebirth legends started.
It was also during this time that the Dragon Lady became the protector. They might have been able to outnumber the Phoenixes, but they could not outnumber both Phoenixes and dragons! Ever since then Phoenixes are rarely seen. I hope they are regaining their numbers. I would love to see one!
The 1st Day of the 1st Moon of King Hargon’s 34th Year
Cherish fell asleep in my arms last night. We were looking at the stars, telling different constellation stories. She was resting her head on my outstretched arm, and after a moment of silence I looked over and she had fallen asleep. She looked so peaceful I could not bear to wake her. I simply rolled onto my side, gave her a kiss on the forehead, pulled up a blanket, and wrapped my other arm around her. Although it felt weird having someone in my arms, something felt soothing. Her soft breath on my cheek was calming. And the peaceful, untroubled look on her face almost convinced me that there was no care in the world, almost. When I woke, she was still there in my arms, smiling at me. Somehow that simple fact made today go easier.
We are traveling as close to the Bellmora border as we can, since there are several elven cities that are wary of humans. I should not be surprised that things are that bad, but I am. The others think we might even be on the brink of war! I do not want to see that.
Traveling is tiring and I still feel nauseous on occasion, but I think my hopes are slightly rising. At least for the moment. Cherish has helped a lot. I do not know how, but for some reason when she smiled at me I feel a little better.
