The 20th Day of the 11th Moon
I did not realize how long it has been since I wrote last. So much has happened. It feels as though it has taken forever and no time at all at the same time. King Hargon has raised taxes. I never realized how much of an affect it has on the middle and lower class. Even though my arm is broken, I have been charged with helping in the orchard again. I still do not climb the ladders, as it is too difficult for me, however I am helping sort through the apples to determine if their quality is up to standards. I have even seen Cherish take days off from working the stand at market in order to help harvest and sort. We are also putting in extra hours.
After talking with Franklin, I have learned that part of the problem is that the tax was raised within only a few months of when they are due. Due to the perishability of fruit, they are able to pay their taxes throughout the year, but with the due date coming soon they must focus more time. According to Cherish they had almost finished paying off taxes, so this is a major blow. I have heard more grumblings about King Hargon going crazy. I am beginning to consider their validity. Especially after those “elven dignitaries” caused a ruckus at the palace.
I can see the strain this is putting on Cherish. I need to find a way to lighten her spirits. But what?
